Beloved author Sandra Boynton recently released her newest book, Woo-Hoo! You're Doing Great!

The star of this book is a chicken. I'm a big fan of helpful chickens. Woo Hoo is listed on Amazon as the #1 new release in children's "self-esteem" books. This is a catch-all category for books that cover emotions and feelings. It doesn't capture what Woo-Hoo truly offers: compassionate support. Man, do we need more of that right now.

In the 1970's, self-esteem was almost universally viewed as fairy dust for kids' wellbeing. There was a whole (well-intended) self-esteem movement in schools, parenting, psychology, and research. Three decades later, substantial research showed that rampant praise was problematic for kids' personal growth.
